..so you've downloaded the Exchange Message Filter tool....

You know, I was just thinking about this today as I had my server log report caught in the archive directory…  I am downloading now. J

...and you are probably looking for an archive manager tool right?  The EHLO blog comes through, once again with a downloadable from the Gotdotnet web site an IMF Archive manager..

Easily book meeting rooms with the Exchange 2003 auto-accept agent

This looks cool.  I seem to recall, in a land and time far away, that we could do this.  It went away and now it’s back!  J

Joy.

The Exchange 2003 Auto Accept Agent is a new tool that extends the benefits of resource scheduling to both Outlook and OWA users.  Meeting organizers can schedule resources (usually meeting rooms) by adding them as a meeting attendee and sending out a meeting request.  The Auto Accept Agent is an event sink that automates the response to these requests, first checking the resource’s schedule to see if it is available.

The agent has some nice features.  Incoming requests are checked for conflicts with existing appointments (not free busy) in the resource’s calendar so booking is not subject to problems that arise because of latencies in free busy replication.  The agent enforces a “booking window” that prevents resources from being booked too far into the future.  Recurring meetings are easier to book since the agent can handle a specified number of conflicts.  For example, if a recurring meeting with 10 instances has just one scheduling conflict, the agent can be configured to accept the entire recurring meeting and send a decline for the single conflict.  From a security perspective no permissions need to be granted on the resource calendar, and all attachments as well as the body of the request can be optionally stripped out.  Finally, the resource does not need to be specified as a “Resource” attendee – a common mistake organizers make when using Outlook’s direct booking feature.

Spiral Stair Slide

Hey Noggin!!!  Have them tear down that spiral staircase again so they can add this…  Will it be “out of spec” with this kind of mod?

This was sent to me with the caption "I want this!" I would have to whole-heartedly agree. (Thanks, WXSnoozle!) Update: Apparently, it's part of voice-mail mastermind Scott Jones's suburban Indianapolis manse. Let me check that again. Yes, Indianapolis. (Thanks, Rob!)...

Exchange 2003 SP1

I heard a rumor that Microsoft was going to announce SP1 at TechEd and turns out it was true.

Go here for more info.  From what I can read the main reason for me to install is the GUI interface for configuring RPC over HTTPS.  If you don’t know what that is then you need to check into it.  Secure email using the full version of Outlook2003 without a VPN or exposing your exchange servers to the nasties of the outside world.

They also have a tools roll up package here which has the following:

  • Add Root Certificate
  • Address Rewrite
  • Application Analyzer 2003 for Lotus Notes
  • ArchiveSink
  • Authoritative Restore
  • AUTD Binding Cleanup
  • Auto Accept Agent
  • Badmail Deletion and Archiving
  • E-Mail Journaling Advanced Configuration
  • Importer for Lotus cc:Mail Archives
  • Disable Certificate Verification
  • DNS Resolver
  • Error Code Look-up
  • Exchange Server Domain Rename Fixup
  • Exchange Server Profile Update
  • Exchange Server Stress and Performance 2003
  • Inter-Organization Replication
  • Exchange Deployment Tools
  • Mailbox Merge Wizard (ExMerge)
  • GUIDGen
  • Jetstress
  • LegacyDN
  • Load Simulator 2003
  • Information Store Viewer (MDBVU32)
  • Management Pack
  • Management Pack Configuration Wizard
  • MTA Check
  • na>Outlook Web Access Web Administration
  • SMTP Internet Protocol Restriction and Accept/Deny List Configuration
  • Up-To-Date Notifications Troubleshooting
  • WinRoute

Exchange 2003 Intelligent Message Filter

Check it out here.   I just installed it and am getting ready to point the flood of spam that is my email account to my dev exchange box. J

We shall see what happens.

Microsoft Announces Windows for Super Computers

Hmm, I have mixed feelings about this.  MS has definitely kept me fed and sleeping indoors but there is a part of me somewhere that squirms and says “NO NO NO NO!!!”  I don’t know what it means yet though.

Microsoft announced Monday that it would create a new Windows version aimed at high-performance computing, an area that rival Linux has largely dominated lately. Dubbed Windows Server HPC (High Performance Computing), the new Windows version will be designed by a new High Performance Computing Team at Microsoft headed by Kyril Faenov, and may be accompanied by an HPC version of SQL Server. In a recent interview with Microsoft vice president Bob Muglia, I asked about areas in which the company was doing poorly against the competition, and only one important market came up: High performance computing. "One workload I think we've historically done poorest in is high-performance computing," Muglia told me. "But that's an area where we're making some ongoing investments too."

Offices Move to Cell, Wi-Fi Combo to Cut Costs, Increase Flexibility

This looks neat.  I wish we could do this…  Maybe in a year or two it will have standardized enough for us to be able to.

Profile of two Hawaiian businesses shows that cutting landlines decreases cost and increases connectivity: The trend might be starting to show where businesses can easily turn over from a wired landline PBX and cell phones outside of the office, to a Wi-Fi and optionally Ethernet based voice and data infrastructure in the office coupled with cellular voice and cellular data on the road....

bv Admin is crap

I don't care what the world says but the REAL world tests have proven for the 3rd migration now that the tool is just plain horse kaka.

When ADMT works 4 times faster and without fail but Bind View won't you have to start to wonder.

We reboot the server and the first time you open the tool it crashes the services. What gives!!! How can people sell such a stupid tool. Oh, and don't call tech support. We have been around the block with them SOOOO many times it is pathetic.

Can you tell I have been up all night pulling my hair out with this?

I am soooo sleepy. This is the part I hate about migrations. Waiting for migrating computers to reboot and re-ACL...

Windows 2000 Default Policy Restore Tool

I have used this before, but be careful.  Make sure your Exchange Server Groups are in the default location.  I seem to remember bad things happening if you had moved them somewhere other than the default (users) OU.

RecreateDefPol.exe is a tool developed for the restoration of the Default Domain and Default Domain Controllers policy files, in case of accidental deletion. This tool is for use exclusively on Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server, and DataCenter Server. Do not use this tool on Windows Server 2003; use Dcgpofix.exe instead (included in Windows Server 2003).

SharePoint Syndication Generator

For you sharepoint fans out there.  You know who you are.  You should like this!!!

Finally! Thanks to Colin (http://randomelements.me.uk/blog/default.aspx) for helping me to iron out the bugs I've managed to finish the accompanying readme file and just uploaded the latest gadget. It's a RSS feed generator for SharePoint Portal Server and Windows SharePoint Services lists and libraries.

Quite a cool piece I think ;-) Lets you select the source list and a couple of settings. Then you can upload the resulting RSS file with a single click to a SharePoint document library to make it avail to your visitors.

I've also finished another SharePoint list template. It is an event (aka calendar) list template incorporating the fields specified in the ESF (http://www.esfstandard.org/) standard. Once I've managed to clean up some of the accompanying Outlook code I'll put it up too, including another XSLT stylesheet to generate ESF compliant RSS out of this list using the above mentioned SharePoint Syndication Generator and an Outlook code piece to put the results directly into your Outlook calendar (without needing NewsGator - which I haven't).

Casio Makes World's Smallest Fuel Cell, With a Possible Catch

Here is more on the ever popular fuel cell trend.  I just hope they can keep the battery life that high when it comes to market!  16 hours seems so far fetched so I am not holding my breath.  Would be nice though.  Maybe they can put the extra component can be made into the wall wart?

Monster DVR

Wow! Seven tuners.  With 5 people in the house that sometimes want to watch live TV and the occasional need for recording two shows at the same time I can see 7 tuners being a super good thing.

typeX_for_infoVia Engadget comes news of Sony's new 1 Terabyte DVR with 7 tuners.

When I started this site last summer, I was toying with the idea of producing a terrabyte tivo as a hacking project. It's not that I'd ever actually want that much space, I just wanted to see if it was possible. I explored it for a few days and there was an outside chance I could hack LBA48 support for larger hard drives into my old standalone TiVo, but I'd still have to mount two of the drives externally and figure out a way to split the IDE cables and still have enough juice in the power supply to keep it running. I scraped it because it wasn't really worth it.

But Sony's working on it, and the seven tuners part seems more outrageous than the amount of storage. If it will be recording HDTV content, a terabyte of storage will allow for a decent amount of content (50+ hours?) and is actually useful. Personally two tuners is great, and there's only been one or two instances where I wished I had one more tuner, but seven is ridiculous. I can't imagine what use case they designed a 7 tuner recorder for. I don't think there has ever been seven things on TV worth watching at once.

FrogPad's one-handed, Bluetooth keyboard

FrogPad has come out with a Bluetooth version of their one-handed keyboard. I've been tempted to try this. The FrogPad is one-fifth the size of a conventional keyboard. I've wanted to try one of these and see if I could acclimate to it. This might be better than folding chiclet keyboards for entering lots of data into a PDA or tablet. A one-handed keyboard is also more useful in a wearable situation (i.e. strapped to a wrist or leg).

Well, I won't do that again... I found a cool site that talks about skinning your WindowsXP machine (or any modern Windows) to look like the Mac OS X environment. Having never been a MAC fan I decided to check it out. It's a bit cheaper than buying a new MAC. :)

One thing to remember is this. If you are testing a beta service pack (ie: SP2) make sure to remove it before installing something that replaces system files.

Having said that I am now reinstalling all my applications on a nice fresh install of Windows XP SP1 and I did get the OS X skin installed. It's quite nice I must say, I just have to get used to having the task bar across the top.
